Fitness for Actors: The Path to a Healthy and Successful Career

Actor Percy Williams
appears in Colán, Piura, wearing a colorful swimsuit and showing an athletic, well-toned body, particularly in his chest, arms, and abdomen. His physique reflects a balance between cardio and strength training, maintaining a healthy condition for his age.

When we think of an actor, we imagine someone who not only plays roles but also radiates health, energy, and vitality. Percy Williams, at 53 years old (turning 54 in February 2025), is a clear example of how fitness can be a fundamental ally for those who want to stand out in acting.

“I've been going to the gym for 20 years,” he says. “I always try to keep my diet healthy; I'm not the kind who meticulously counts calories,” he adds. “I consider the gym a part of my life, which, besides giving me the image you see on screen, also gives me health and relaxation.”

The Importance of Fitness for an Actor: Acting is a profession that demands more than talent; it requires endurance, agility, and the ability to adapt to various roles. Fitness not only helps actors maintain a physical appearance suitable for their roles but also provides them with energy, improves their posture, and enables them to perform at their best during long workdays.

The Mind-Body Connection: Percy Williams knows that being fit is not just about looking good but also about feeling good. Regular exercise releases endorphins, reducing stress and anxiety, which can be common in an actor's life. This mental clarity allows actors to concentrate better on their roles, conveying emotions more effectively.

Physical Preparation for Demanding Roles: Actors often need to undergo physical transformations for a role, whether by gaining muscle mass or building endurance. Being in good shape, like Percy, allows an actor to adapt to these demands more easily, avoiding injuries and meeting the physical requirements of each character.

Practical Tips for Actors Who Want to Start Their Fitness Journey

  • Balanced Routines: It’s essential to work on both cardio and muscle strengthening. This ensures endurance for energy-demanding scenes and strength for more physical roles.
  • Functional Training: Movements involving multiple muscle groups, like those Percy performs, prepare the body for the challenges faced on set.
  • Flexibility and Mobility: It's not just about being strong but also about being agile. Exercises like yoga or Pilates help prevent injuries and enhance the ability to portray characters requiring complex movements.

Nutrition and Rest, Your Best Allies: Percy Williams understands that exercise is just one part of the equation. A balanced diet and proper rest are essential for the body to recover and stay in top condition. Eating healthily and getting enough sleep ensure that an actor is ready to face any challenge that comes their way.

Fitness not only transforms the body; it transforms an actor's career. Percy Williams, at 53, is living proof that regular exercise and a healthy lifestyle can help an actor stay in their best form, ready to shine in any role life presents. Are you an actor or actress? What do I do now when I can’t already play soccer?

When an injury stops your sports career, it doesn’t mean necessarily it’s the end of your labor life.

The photos of this entry have been provided by Martín Castañeda who is the model too. For contacting him, check the story right below.

Martín Castañeda, 48, is looking for a job as personal trainer, bodyguard, and driver. Due to the existent economic crisis in Peru, this former pro soccer player decided to expand his job chances, so he told us his story hoped to somebody could hire him. “Work dignifies  people,” he states.

Castañeda is a Sullana, Peru-native. He began a productive career in soccer, in 1994, when he was 18 years old. He held active until 2010, when he was 36 years old, the moment when he was forced to retire because of an injury in the meniscuses of knee.

How did he deal with the injury after 16 years chasing a ball, that included to join Alianza Atlético, the emblematic pro soccer team of Sullana?  “I took it pretty relaxed because I was just finishing my career,” he says.

What he did OK

When you face a similar situation which you had a highlighted career in sports in general, and any circumstance forces you to stop, your choices will be ever to think it’s already the end, or reinventing yourself not leaving to do what you like to do, or adding other abilities you already had but what were not necessary to deploy once a time.

If you think it’s already the end, go here to read more tips.

If you chose to reinvent yourself, the plan that Martín Castañeda decided can serve you as a reference.

  1. Turn on your lamp – Being a competitive athlete is ever going to put the spotlight on you, but when you’re out, that lamp is going to be turned off for other new talents to occupy the place you occupied. It’s a life rule, you can’t do much against it… or maybe you do. Turn on that lamp again but this time holding your whole legacy under your arms and a good story to tell based upon your achievement and experience.
  2. Become trendy – The social media allow that any retired athlete follows keeping in it if somebody knows how to keep a close, warm relationship with his community of followers. And if you don’t haveany? Do what Martín did – meet some specialist who have followed your career, who has the skill to hold you in, so no matter if you are not in activity, you will be indeed in the active mind of everybody. It’s called… marketing.
  3. Open up your chances – This is a time of your life which you don’t have already to focus your full time on one only activity, but you can add others more which you have trained or which you have proven experience. If you don’t have it clear, do like Martín did – he sat down to talk to one of our producers, he began to think about himself and his talents, and he could define in the process he could be an excellent personal trainer, an skillful security agent, a right driver. Explore these things you do well too, these can turn in a way to pay your bills, including your sport abilities. Everything counts.

What he must do now

A Martín Castañeda’s comparative advantage is he met ChulucanasGym, then he told his story. That is going to provide him international exposure and it’s a good play because the people who come toward Peruvian Northern are going to contact him directly for taking any of the services he provides. We are going to leave his contact later.

In fact, this article is a big step but it’s not enough so what it’s coming up next counts as much as what he did up to this moment.

  1. Acquaint yourself to technology – your social media accounts give you exposure but they also must allow you to talk directly to the people who are going to take your services, and that means you must develop skills for that contact to be made in a kind, friendly environment. If you get that contact to talk to you through any chat application, it’s an extra point. But remember – never be impatient, remind the smiles are for free to give but they end to reward you worthy at the less-expected moment.
  2. Provide an excellent service – We repeat that if you get to close a deal, give your best for the experience working with somebody else hiring you to be satisfactory in every sense, since the moment both say hello until the moment both say a see-you, and that to start a long-term relationship. Don’t push the people to hire your or to follow hiring you – let the things to flow naturally. A user who feels to take the control of the situation uses to turn a satisfied user, and that means he can recommend you to his contact list, what will be a better advertisement than the best pic, the best vid, or the best written copy.
  3. Don’t let they miss you – Do you remember that about don’t let to turn off the lamp what we suggested you in the beginning? The fact you have engaged with somebody doesn’t mean you can chant victory. In the opposite, that means you must grow a relationship which you make to highlight every certain time. How? Look for special moments (birthdays, holidays) to send a greeting and remind you are ever available. Or sometimes, setting a good conversation asking for the mood of that user uses to come good, especially in these times when it seems the stress is going to swallow us. And never push – let everything to flow organically.

Thanks, Martín, for trusting us, we hope those tips serve him as well as yourself. If you want to contact him, go to his Facebook and WhatsApp profiles.

“I feel uncomfortable when they look straight at it”

What you can do  when these better-developed body parts of yours seem to catch everybody’s attention.

Percy, 41, Works by turns at the reception of a public building. The suit fits him OK, as much as a guy asked him if he works out – Percy answers “yes, I do,” but, as he judges, he also have noticed many people, no matter the sex, look straight at his ass.

“The suit is made of a thin cloth,” he tells, “then, when I stand up, I feel the people look straight at my buttocks.” It’s when a confusing sensation fills him up: In one hand, it feels good when the people look straight at you, but sometimes you feel the looks want to get you naked.”

Among his chances, Percy has considered to diminish his muscle mass by doing exercise.  That means doing more cardio than power, or more aerobic than anaerobic if we say it otherwise. That could be an option, but is it the right one?

If having much muscle mass is a risk for your physical health, you should consider it, indeed. But if the reason is not at the physical frame, what can you do? Here some practical tips:

  1. Don’t forget what motivated you – The first one you must remember is the reason why you entered training. Do you feel the same conviction than the first day?  Has it increased or decreased? If that excitement keeps strong, or if it has raised, it would be worthy you remind that to yourself everyday you wake up. But, if it had diminished, talk with your trainer alone for reviewing wwwhat is happening, defining what to do up forward.
  2. Use your body language smart – Assume the people is going to see as they have eyes and you can’t do anything to stop them. Even, they can opine about, you can’t do anything to forbid it to them unless it turns stalking. However, if you detect somebody looks straight at that better-developed body part of yours, don’t act aggressively. Look at the eye, address a friendly smile like if were a greeting. The folk will realize you realized, so he or she will prefer to see aside.
  3. Feel proud of all what you worked out – For what nobody ashame you with your body, begin not to feel ashamed of your body by yourself. Take atime alone for watching it, thinking these shapes catching the attention are the result of your own effort (and your genetics, maybe), so assume them like achievements or competitive assets. When you appreciate your body in a positive way, you can go much confident, much attitude, and the people will notice that immediately. They Will continue looking at you but you won’t feel overwhelmed about the way they look at you, actually.
  4. Don’t do it if it’s by shame – Buying baggy clothes is an option only if it gives comfort to your body. But if you do it for eluding the problem, it’s going to increase the regret because, although you cover that highlighting part well, you’ll ever have the idea they follow seeing it anyway.
  5. Switch your posse – Start to make friends who appreciate by your talent beyond your body shape, or that highlighting, umcomfortable body part, or who appreciate you like a full set, who help you to turn the uncomfortable into something natural. Of course, that will demand these friends have a wide-open mind, not telling about the psychological maturity. But consider if you relate with people who is ever repeating you the same, and  in the same tune, you’ll believe in the short-term or the long-term it’s the only way to see the world – your body too. A winner is characterized by keeping the comfort zones off.

Look at Mario Kanashiro’s manga

[Exclusive] Now, the dancer and model also amaze us as a cartoonist.

We’ve learned about athletes or bodybuilders who serve as inspiration to artists who take them pictures, shot them on video or film, draw them, or sculpt them. We’ve learned about bodybuilders or athletes who turn artists, or viceversa, exploring the different manifestation ways. Even, we’ve shown them here.

But, what happens when bodybuilders and athletes are also artists not meaning to exclude some of those dimensions?

Speaking much deeper, art and sports share common values what you never have realized neither: looking for perfection, wishing to overcome obstacles, needing to move, satisfying to reach goals, the discipline turning the unusual into daily, the recognized achievement.

Then, don’t get surprised if you decide to pass from physical culture to the artistic one, or reverse, and all during a single day, and returning to someone of them, or being between them not meaning it a conflict of time or personal/professional identity.

It’s the case of our friend Mario Kanashiro in Nagoya, Japan. We’ve already told you his story by here: after learning to dance and realizing he did it very good, now he is a trainer working in the Land of Rising Sun. But, let’s also remember Mario already came from a previous artistic experience – music.

Then, to get engaged to the dance costed but it was relatively simple to go achieving. Additionally, let’s remember he worked as a model. Review Mario’s story here.

Nevertheless, what we didn’t know is that Mario also has got skill for drawing. “When I was in high-school, I drew for some months as hobby,”  he tells us.  But once upon a day of 2021, he decided to retake it, and since June 2022, he is practicing it much intense – inclusive, he shares it on his social media accounts.

What he mainly portrays are manga characters, the Japanese art of comic, and animé ones, that would be something like bringing manga to the animation by hand or by computer. “I like drawings, I like to design them and creating something original,” he adds.

And this is very consistent with his facet of dancer and choreographer, which creations he continues sharing on his social media. In all them, he print his personal touch, his followers love it. “Inclusive, they advice me to improve.” Coming next, we offer you a selection of the drawings Mario himself did from his whole work. What do you look them like?

Drawings by Mario Kanashiro.

It’s necessary to say that the drawing, as any type of art, influences positively in mental health of any bodybuilder or athlete because it allows him to deal with daily pressures, develops focusing levels much effective as he doesn’t do the same thing ever, and it increases the mood to retake the physical activity. In some cases, the physical activity itself influences the artistic inspiration as it opens the mind from the body up to other conscience state.

Have you ever tried it? Tell us in the comments below, on our Twitter account, or at chulucanasgym@gmail.com. We’ll love to know what you do, and, if you agree, share it with our entire community.

Don’t miss Mario on his social media accounts: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube.

Required certification

A proposal to face the informality on physical training.

We’ve already spoke up about the apparent lack of control on the manners how the pupils are treated at the gyms of Piura. From a supervision absence in the training methodology to the anabolic-steroids trafficking, passing through an adequate psychological advisory, the issue did not interest to the correspondent authorities.

Meanwhile, men and women use the service ignoring if the investment they do will bring them some benefit to their life or it won’t. The appearance of a franchise in the cities of Piura and Sullana  have introduced a service that all the gyms doesn’t have – nutritionists. Although the consultations are included in the cost of the membership, this is over the most can pay.

A way to face the problem is the certification of trainers, but a search we did to have an interview that allows us to put this query in perspective with somebody had no results. In the other hand, the Piura Bodybuilding Federation did have summoned to specialized trainings with certification, but it’s ignored if there is an evaluation that allow to know if the learned in those courses is applied and how.

Despite, Piura has turned a place of this sport, and every March, it’s organized the Mister and Miss Piura contests to award the people who based on their word, and some –extra—help, have reached aesthetics and plasticity, although not necessarily good health.

The united, the stronger

César Campos was chosen as 2011 Mister Piura after years of continuous work for having a recognizement in bodybuilding. During the national phase –Mister Peru—he reached the fourth place in the general classification. Since 2007, Campos Works in a known gymnasium at Piura Downtown, after doing it since he was 20 in his native Sullana.

Before he moved looking for a better professional future, he was committed to create a bodybuilding federation in Sullana. His main concern was the lack of certification for trainers at that town. Neither the authorities, neither his most colleagues supported him because they didn’t understand the importance of the process or simple commercial envy. Join the competence and becoming one only front to demand a better labor treatment too was not well seen by the Sullana’s mastership.

The gymnasium where he worked in Sullana was part of the franchise that was introducing new practices in the way how the pupils are treated. Once upon a good time, we tried to have an interview with the trainer in charge to explore this issue, but we got no answer.

Yes, but…

This was not a difficult to talk extraofficially to other trainers. The most of them recognize that the certification and professionalization of their jobs is necessary, but very few have the money to invest in the courses, or their gyms are not interested in granting them, when the benefit is for the own business.

And obviously, there are who have no interest in studying and certifying because they are trainers due to labor chances. This means if they get a better job, they will quit in the long term. In Bellavista, Sullana, there is a dude who eventually works as a trainer at a downtown gymnasium. Unlike his most colleagues, he has Physical Education official pedagogycal studies, but his goal is not staying to work there but to have a job at some school. The reason why he accepted the job was to pay his studies.

Butt, analyzing well the issue, could this be a choice to get an official certification? In other countries (like Spain) and Lima, this is a key requirement to work not only at gyms but everywhere that requires to monitor the physical activities of people, no matter their age.

Before it turns a public health problem, authorities, store operators, trainers, and pupils should consider the need to assume this issue for the good of community. So, the physical activity will be really constructive and it will develop adequately one of our dimensions as human beings. The indifference to the issue won’t bring positive consequences.
