What is really a gymbro?

Within admiring, wondering, or misunderstanding, here we guide you about the good and the bad of being so.

If you are one of these guys who spend your every free time by training or standing at the gym, if you’re updated about supplements, if you pay your membership timely, if you’re watching in very detail what you eat (what includes how, how much, when, and why), if you’ve turned an expert to decode the nutritional facts charts – anyway, if your personal and social life spins around the gym, you’re maybe a gymbro (from gym brother).

By extension, at least in Peru, gymbros are these training partners whom you share the same right lifestyle at the same right place, as much as the relationship that began at the gym can transcend to other circles of your life.

“In general, the gymbros begin by sharing the same machine, and they soon match their whole life to work out the same muscle group, to use the same supplement, and even reaching the moment that if one of them leaves the gym, the other one follows him,” a trainer tells us.

When yes, when not

The gymbros can turn real communities, the gymfrats (from gym fraternity). For the people who don’t belong to the fitness world, this can wonder them and even a trigger to make fun (there are many memes about), but for many professional trainers, meeting gymbros is a serious matter because they can be capable to move customers agreeing or disagreeing, depending on the experience they have at the gym.

“everyone who are trainers today started being gymbros upon a time ago,” they add us.

There are also who use the term to mask a romantic or sexual relationship that began at the gym rooms. First of all, it’s not bad to fall in love with your gymbro, but it would be good not to use it as an euphemism for avoiding to say lover or friend with benefits, especially if you go to a medical check due to some little sexual health problem – the medical doctors are not fool, although you think so.

Benefits & risks

Is it good or bad to be a gymbro, fitness freak, or gym-rat? Like we use to say here, it depends on the situation.

  • Positive – your time is better organized as much as you life quality visibly improves compared to the average.
  • Negative – You reach to the point that you are at the gym without other reason than being right there believing you won’t be happy somewhere else.

  • Positive – Your gymbro turns your main motivator for never giving up the training, as much as the sparring-type methodologies work wonderful for you.
  • Negative – Going to the gym depends on your gymbro goes to. If he doesn’t go, you don’t go. In other words, you nullify your proactivity.

  • Positive – You’re not easily teased by the advertising when it’s about to introduce you some new product.
  • Negative – You become freak, turning you into a compulsive buyer of every supplement, apparel, clothes, method, or ‘miracle’ that is advertised.

  • Positive –Your gymfrat is not only in good times, but in bad and especially worst times either.
  • Negative – Believing your gymfrat is the only posse which you can aspire to.

  • Positive – your gymbro Will ever encourage you to achieve a new asset.
  • Negative – Your gymbro pushes you to behave the opposite to the sport.

Have in mind…

After that, being a gymbro  is not bad at all even provided you know how to take it locked at the gym, or if it suddenly becomes a great physical support and emotional support. But if it begins to infest your other dimensions, get concerned – maybe, you need professional support to see what is going you wrong.

Finally, dont confuse a gymbro and a gympro, who is the guy training aware at a gym because he lives through his body, whether a competition or a career which the physique is key (models, artists, security agents, lifesavers). In fact, a gympro knows he must give the necessary dedication to the training, but he is also aware he must keep a physical, mental, or social balance.

“I feel uncomfortable when they look straight at it”

What you can do  when these better-developed body parts of yours seem to catch everybody’s attention.

Percy, 41, Works by turns at the reception of a public building. The suit fits him OK, as much as a guy asked him if he works out – Percy answers “yes, I do,” but, as he judges, he also have noticed many people, no matter the sex, look straight at his ass.

“The suit is made of a thin cloth,” he tells, “then, when I stand up, I feel the people look straight at my buttocks.” It’s when a confusing sensation fills him up: In one hand, it feels good when the people look straight at you, but sometimes you feel the looks want to get you naked.”

Among his chances, Percy has considered to diminish his muscle mass by doing exercise.  That means doing more cardio than power, or more aerobic than anaerobic if we say it otherwise. That could be an option, but is it the right one?

If having much muscle mass is a risk for your physical health, you should consider it, indeed. But if the reason is not at the physical frame, what can you do? Here some practical tips:

  1. Don’t forget what motivated you – The first one you must remember is the reason why you entered training. Do you feel the same conviction than the first day?  Has it increased or decreased? If that excitement keeps strong, or if it has raised, it would be worthy you remind that to yourself everyday you wake up. But, if it had diminished, talk with your trainer alone for reviewing wwwhat is happening, defining what to do up forward.
  2. Use your body language smart – Assume the people is going to see as they have eyes and you can’t do anything to stop them. Even, they can opine about, you can’t do anything to forbid it to them unless it turns stalking. However, if you detect somebody looks straight at that better-developed body part of yours, don’t act aggressively. Look at the eye, address a friendly smile like if were a greeting. The folk will realize you realized, so he or she will prefer to see aside.
  3. Feel proud of all what you worked out – For what nobody ashame you with your body, begin not to feel ashamed of your body by yourself. Take atime alone for watching it, thinking these shapes catching the attention are the result of your own effort (and your genetics, maybe), so assume them like achievements or competitive assets. When you appreciate your body in a positive way, you can go much confident, much attitude, and the people will notice that immediately. They Will continue looking at you but you won’t feel overwhelmed about the way they look at you, actually.
  4. Don’t do it if it’s by shame – Buying baggy clothes is an option only if it gives comfort to your body. But if you do it for eluding the problem, it’s going to increase the regret because, although you cover that highlighting part well, you’ll ever have the idea they follow seeing it anyway.
  5. Switch your posse – Start to make friends who appreciate by your talent beyond your body shape, or that highlighting, umcomfortable body part, or who appreciate you like a full set, who help you to turn the uncomfortable into something natural. Of course, that will demand these friends have a wide-open mind, not telling about the psychological maturity. But consider if you relate with people who is ever repeating you the same, and  in the same tune, you’ll believe in the short-term or the long-term it’s the only way to see the world – your body too. A winner is characterized by keeping the comfort zones off.

Bullying – how to be part of the solution

Millions of people are victims everyday worldwide because the simple matter of being who they are, not looking like the predominant social standard.

May the gyms or training fields be other places where the stalkers can find new victims, or insist with who are already?  The answer is yes – it’s going to depend on you, trainer, this stops or corrects.

The bullying consists in, during a lapse of time, stalking somebody purposed to injure the self-esteem, or forcing to segregate out from a bunch of people. The agressions can be physical, psychological, verbal, sexual, social, an even laboral (mobbing).

The reason why you must not allow the bullying in your gym or training field is as simple as the attendants go to learn, perfect by contending themselves. So, if you detect the competitive spirit opens a chance to the aggression to the contender, you must stop the situation immediately.

The ideal would be your place has a clear written regardin rule (for example: bullyin is not allowed here). But the truth is that, whether a rule or not, the stalkers ever will look for the way to injure. That’s why we give you here some urgent ideas you can apply while the parties look for specialized professional advisory for healing that situation.

As a trainer:

  • Have clear your behavior rules: They must be based upon the respect, they must be shown with right facts. If your pupils see you stalk, although you reprimend them, they’ll understand they have an understood permission to stalk.
  • Choose carefully the ways you are going to encourage your pupil: It’s not the best idea comparing to other ones, or, if he doesn’t do the routines with the intensity you expect, the better would be asking why his performance is not the wished before disqualifying him.
  • Don’t do a party with the stalkers neither the victim: More than neutral, remind them you are the leader in the room or at the field, so if they are not capable to respect themselves, they respect on you at least. You don’t have to scream it but to say it straight.
  • Don’t ignore the aggression, don’t encourage it neither: Make the gym or the training field to be a kind place for everyone. But neither act like nothing happens because the indifference, in this case, is more dangerous than any kind of action due to it can get like agreement or complicity.

Against the stalker(s):

  • Once you have identified who stalk, talk one by one and in private. Your message has to be clear and straight – at least inside the gym or the training field, that behavior is not allowed.
  • If the Stalker(s) relapse(s), call the attention in public. The message and the tone must be exactly the same. If you can add you are not going to tolerate it once again, that could work.
  • If both previous rules don’t work and your gym or training field has a written anti-bullying policy, apply the top penalty.
  • Never let the stalkers join you into their party. Usually, who stalk empower when they make the victim to believe it’s not about their bunch but there are much more people beside them. When you say them you are not part of the aggression, this begins to weaken.
  • If the Stalker(s) is (are) under legal age, contact the parents or tutors and explain the situation as well as your position about.
  • Don’t add exhausting training routines as a punishment. The true penalty for the stalker(s) is not doing two additional sets or staying 30 minutes more but to have restricted access to the place or services you offer.
  • It’s probable the stalkers cancel their membership or fee. Don’t see it like a lose – see it like an affirmative action which looks for protecting the positive experience of working out at the gym or the training field.

With the victim:

  • Talk in private, let clear he must take action to block the aggressions in an assertive way, and that you don’t see any reason for he to ashame, feel fear or guilt.
  • If he needs to talk to you, give the proper space and time. Remember you are the leader at the gym or training field. So, if you’re not trustworthy, who more he could vent with what he feels? Check out this guide if you need more orientation.
  • It’s not enough to say “you gotta be strong”. It’s necessary to give effective, smart ideas to accomplish it. If you own the proper psychological or pedagogic resources, offer them. If not, refer the victim to specialized professional advisory – the most is free.
  • Regarding the previous, never advise to respond the aggression with a larger aggression – the violence only borns more violence, and you’ll get more bruised in the end.
  • Don’t revictimize – don’t expose the victim to a new aggression, in other words. Don’t overprotect, neither.
  • Use the training to provide confidence and courage. But that doesn’t mean exhausting but teaching to feel proud of the achievements, understanding they all were reached based upon the own effort. It’s a very practical way to go educating on self- esteem.
  • If we have recommended you not to be part of the stalking party, neither join a party with the victim. Keep in the middle but open to ssolve the conflicts breaking out between both parties.
  • And don’t forget if the victim is under legal age, contact the parents or tutors to coordinate a supporting circle providing tools and resources to overcome the aggression episodes.
  • If the victim decides to cancel his fee or membership, give the time and the space. Probably, he needs it to think better about the issue. Indeed, let clear the doors are ever open.

Look at Mario Kanashiro’s manga

[Exclusive] Now, the dancer and model also amaze us as a cartoonist.

We’ve learned about athletes or bodybuilders who serve as inspiration to artists who take them pictures, shot them on video or film, draw them, or sculpt them. We’ve learned about bodybuilders or athletes who turn artists, or viceversa, exploring the different manifestation ways. Even, we’ve shown them here.

But, what happens when bodybuilders and athletes are also artists not meaning to exclude some of those dimensions?

Speaking much deeper, art and sports share common values what you never have realized neither: looking for perfection, wishing to overcome obstacles, needing to move, satisfying to reach goals, the discipline turning the unusual into daily, the recognized achievement.

Then, don’t get surprised if you decide to pass from physical culture to the artistic one, or reverse, and all during a single day, and returning to someone of them, or being between them not meaning it a conflict of time or personal/professional identity.

It’s the case of our friend Mario Kanashiro in Nagoya, Japan. We’ve already told you his story by here: after learning to dance and realizing he did it very good, now he is a trainer working in the Land of Rising Sun. But, let’s also remember Mario already came from a previous artistic experience – music.

Then, to get engaged to the dance costed but it was relatively simple to go achieving. Additionally, let’s remember he worked as a model. Review Mario’s story here.

Nevertheless, what we didn’t know is that Mario also has got skill for drawing. “When I was in high-school, I drew for some months as hobby,”  he tells us.  But once upon a day of 2021, he decided to retake it, and since June 2022, he is practicing it much intense – inclusive, he shares it on his social media accounts.

What he mainly portrays are manga characters, the Japanese art of comic, and animé ones, that would be something like bringing manga to the animation by hand or by computer. “I like drawings, I like to design them and creating something original,” he adds.

And this is very consistent with his facet of dancer and choreographer, which creations he continues sharing on his social media. In all them, he print his personal touch, his followers love it. “Inclusive, they advice me to improve.” Coming next, we offer you a selection of the drawings Mario himself did from his whole work. What do you look them like?

Drawings by Mario Kanashiro.

It’s necessary to say that the drawing, as any type of art, influences positively in mental health of any bodybuilder or athlete because it allows him to deal with daily pressures, develops focusing levels much effective as he doesn’t do the same thing ever, and it increases the mood to retake the physical activity. In some cases, the physical activity itself influences the artistic inspiration as it opens the mind from the body up to other conscience state.

Have you ever tried it? Tell us in the comments below, on our Twitter account, or at chulucanasgym@gmail.com. We’ll love to know what you do, and, if you agree, share it with our entire community.

Don’t miss Mario on his social media accounts: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube.
