Bullying – how to be part of the solution

Millions of people are victims everyday worldwide because the simple matter of being who they are, not looking like the predominant social standard.

May the gyms or training fields be other places where the stalkers can find new victims, or insist with who are already?  The answer is yes – it’s going to depend on you, trainer, this stops or corrects.

The bullying consists in, during a lapse of time, stalking somebody purposed to injure the self-esteem, or forcing to segregate out from a bunch of people. The agressions can be physical, psychological, verbal, sexual, social, an even laboral (mobbing).

The reason why you must not allow the bullying in your gym or training field is as simple as the attendants go to learn, perfect by contending themselves. So, if you detect the competitive spirit opens a chance to the aggression to the contender, you must stop the situation immediately.

The ideal would be your place has a clear written regardin rule (for example: bullyin is not allowed here). But the truth is that, whether a rule or not, the stalkers ever will look for the way to injure. That’s why we give you here some urgent ideas you can apply while the parties look for specialized professional advisory for healing that situation.

As a trainer:

  • Have clear your behavior rules: They must be based upon the respect, they must be shown with right facts. If your pupils see you stalk, although you reprimend them, they’ll understand they have an understood permission to stalk.
  • Choose carefully the ways you are going to encourage your pupil: It’s not the best idea comparing to other ones, or, if he doesn’t do the routines with the intensity you expect, the better would be asking why his performance is not the wished before disqualifying him.
  • Don’t do a party with the stalkers neither the victim: More than neutral, remind them you are the leader in the room or at the field, so if they are not capable to respect themselves, they respect on you at least. You don’t have to scream it but to say it straight.
  • Don’t ignore the aggression, don’t encourage it neither: Make the gym or the training field to be a kind place for everyone. But neither act like nothing happens because the indifference, in this case, is more dangerous than any kind of action due to it can get like agreement or complicity.

Against the stalker(s):

  • Once you have identified who stalk, talk one by one and in private. Your message has to be clear and straight – at least inside the gym or the training field, that behavior is not allowed.
  • If the Stalker(s) relapse(s), call the attention in public. The message and the tone must be exactly the same. If you can add you are not going to tolerate it once again, that could work.
  • If both previous rules don’t work and your gym or training field has a written anti-bullying policy, apply the top penalty.
  • Never let the stalkers join you into their party. Usually, who stalk empower when they make the victim to believe it’s not about their bunch but there are much more people beside them. When you say them you are not part of the aggression, this begins to weaken.
  • If the Stalker(s) is (are) under legal age, contact the parents or tutors and explain the situation as well as your position about.
  • Don’t add exhausting training routines as a punishment. The true penalty for the stalker(s) is not doing two additional sets or staying 30 minutes more but to have restricted access to the place or services you offer.
  • It’s probable the stalkers cancel their membership or fee. Don’t see it like a lose – see it like an affirmative action which looks for protecting the positive experience of working out at the gym or the training field.

With the victim:

  • Talk in private, let clear he must take action to block the aggressions in an assertive way, and that you don’t see any reason for he to ashame, feel fear or guilt.
  • If he needs to talk to you, give the proper space and time. Remember you are the leader at the gym or training field. So, if you’re not trustworthy, who more he could vent with what he feels? Check out this guide if you need more orientation.
  • It’s not enough to say “you gotta be strong”. It’s necessary to give effective, smart ideas to accomplish it. If you own the proper psychological or pedagogic resources, offer them. If not, refer the victim to specialized professional advisory – the most is free.
  • Regarding the previous, never advise to respond the aggression with a larger aggression – the violence only borns more violence, and you’ll get more bruised in the end.
  • Don’t revictimize – don’t expose the victim to a new aggression, in other words. Don’t overprotect, neither.
  • Use the training to provide confidence and courage. But that doesn’t mean exhausting but teaching to feel proud of the achievements, understanding they all were reached based upon the own effort. It’s a very practical way to go educating on self- esteem.
  • If we have recommended you not to be part of the stalking party, neither join a party with the victim. Keep in the middle but open to ssolve the conflicts breaking out between both parties.
  • And don’t forget if the victim is under legal age, contact the parents or tutors to coordinate a supporting circle providing tools and resources to overcome the aggression episodes.
  • If the victim decides to cancel his fee or membership, give the time and the space. Probably, he needs it to think better about the issue. Indeed, let clear the doors are ever open.

Winning fair

An infallible guide to triumph in sports – and life.

We’ve already introduced you Ronald Jonathan Benites Rangel, a Laws student with three diplommas in criminal issues, extrajudicial conciliator, ecology activist, and fan of bodybuilding and biking too. His sport journey began in 2010 when he decided he wanted to improve his physical condition through power training, and he didn’t stop until participating in three Mister Piura contests in 2012, 2013, and 2014.

“I did it because I wanted to prove myself how much I’ve could advance and comparing my level to other Piura bodybuilders, and, why not, everywhere,” he affirms. “Also, I wanted to prove it can participate any contest, then passing the anti-doping tests without fear to objections or accusations.”

“You don’t know the sensation someone has going up the stage and contest! It’s an emotion you only can describe in that same instant,” he comments so proud while his eyes shine by satisfaction. “I didn’t win but I dared.” The journey is not simple. The obstacles appear everytime, and the most difficult is the indifference to sports. “One thing concerning me is the bodybuilding has no sponsorship from companies and my town’s institutions,” he claims quiet but convinced.

The genetics and natural feeding that still can be gotten in an agricultural community like Chulucanas, Peru, made possible he grew, muscularily speaking, not needing to run to synthetized supplementation. “I eat everything I can but balanced, plus my exercises routine,” he tells.

Although in the beginning, his family didn’t see well his hobby, they realized soon it was getting benefits to him. “I like to go out with my friends but I don’t smoke, I don’t drink alcohol, I sleep enough, oh!, and I neither make drugs,” he explains. Also, Ronald has a good academic performance, he’s a student leader, and he has discovered an insight as a conferencist and motivator, getting to catch his public’s interest.

At a workshop for youth in Sullana, he got to convince his audience on the need to grow and consume healthy food. After the presentation, he was one of the most required speakers by the attendants to make a picture.

The RJ Strategy

Based upon his own experience, we thought what things worked to Ronald that could work to you, and we found a quite exigent pattern, but if you follow it up, you culd also be proud of your own results, and playing fair.

  • Find the reason inside you – Almost all the people motivate to begin a fitness plan if someone else goes with them. It helps for sure but it creates dependance. So, the idea is that the spark to begin, continue, and get must break out inside you. If nobody wants to follow you, move on. The triumph or the defeat will be your own responsibility.
  • Set yourself clear and realistic goals – Yes, it’s necessary you set up a personal plan –look, personal—that points out wwwhich your sport goals will be and what adequate procedures will be to reach them. Take advice from a reliable specialist to see which ones will allow to optimize your own energy without underworking or overworking. Ronald also can advise you, and we’ll have this contact below this article.
  • Get away what they will say – The people have right to opine, but never forget you have right to improve. Empower your convictions, and learn to manage the critic, wwhat means valuating it depending on who comes it on. Obviously, don’t listen to who doesn’t know anything of this – it’s losing worthy time.
  • Apply honesty to your own plan – Believe it or not, there are people who try to cheat themselves even when they work out. Don’t do that mistake because you’re gonna frustrate or you’re gonna do an unrecoverable damage. Don’t accept the abounding magic recipes. Everything in life is gotten by working hard, and that’s the way it is. It can take you years even, but if you are patient and perseverant, you’ll se you’ll get it, and nobody could question your triumphs.
  • Penalyze and award yourself – wait! This doesn’t mean you begin to hurt yourself, but you set up appropriate penalties and awards to your goals. So, you will learn to valuate your own effort. Your coach or Ronald can advise on this issue.
  • Register your process – Are you going in progress? And according to what document? Remember there are advance indicators for every sport (anthropometrics, speed or weight records, etc). Then, take some minutes to have your own statistics and so having your own objective tool indicating if everything goes OK or not. Even it can be funny you design your own personal sport database, for you to set up progress scenarios.
  • Share your experience – You don’t know the huge existent disinformation, even at gyms, about physical training strategies, so it’s necessary the people who have known to follow a plan, and prove it works, can do a sort of pair advisory complementing the specialized sport advisory. Plus, you’ll feel the satisfaction to see that all your effort was not in vain.

Ronald is available for customized training sessions and sport advisory, as well as speaking and conferences through Ronald_27_89@hotmail.com, his Facebook account, and our Twitter account.

The Baró Strategy

Four steps for Peru to walk on to sports excellence.

By Nelson Peñaherrera. Photos by Estany Tineo.

About three decades ago, Peru’s Olympic Committee began to have Cuba’s spors specialists for increasing our achievement in diverse events.
As part of that tradition, René Baró, 56, master for Havana University’s Manuel Fajardo National Sports Institute, arrived into our contry five years ago, being initially assigned to Tacnna, but we have him in Piura a year ago.
One of his challenges is discovering and training table tennis new talents in La Unión (Lower Piura) , where there is already a significant group of boys and girls preparing on. “The Municipality is giving me all its availability,” he clears.

Baró is trying to introduce the Cuban model that became successful in every sports competition or the majority of them, at least, including Olympics. “If you compare the amount of medals Cuba has got per inhabitant versus the amount of medals United States has got per inhabitant, you’ll see Cuba has got many more gathered,” he explains me.

However, a first element of resistance is Peruvian idiosyncracy that judges everything, that seems to accomplish what the worst enemy of a Peruvian is another Peruvian, that has a huge skill to cheat. And all this affects the sport achievement.
Is there a solution to the problem? Mr Baró thinks yes, and he has a strategy that can work even provided we truly apply it.

1. Building a pyramid
The most extended Sports policy in Peru continues to be promoting soccer and volley, ignoring there are most sports and disciplines fit to our biotype (the general configuration  of our bodies), which highlights our small height. Curiously, this could be our strength if we focus on successful results.
“Piura can be a good place to promote the fighting sports like judo, karate or olympic wrestling,” Baró suggests. “Also gymnastics, athletism, or table tennis.”
Talent detection has be to base on worldwide standarized tests, those leave out lobbies, social status or buddies network.

“Then, once you detect them, enter them in a County’s High Achievement Center, where they live intern for receiving academic instruction and controlled sports training,” he explains. “It got to be one center in every Peru’s county.”
The best county talents can be promoted to a State’s High Achievement Center, and who highlight in that level, reaching to a National High Achievement Center.
“There you have the three levels of the pyramid, and if you apply them, you’ll see that sports in Peru improve a lot,” Baró assures.

2. The art of sport is based on its science
The thesis that René Baró wrote in Cuba for graduating begins explaining the bio-psycho-social reality of the sport, what means it obbeys to anatomic and physiologic processes, it much involves the mental state of who practices it, and it is an integrative element to our community.

How many Physical Education teachers, trainers know it? “In Piura, there’s much empiricism,” Baró Observes. “It’s necessary to have seminars with the people, make them to understand that sports obbey to a system and a methology,” he points out.

“The two strongest problems here are few motor skills and laterality,” the specialist states, to have the right positions that reflects when we don’t know for practicing every sport… and  we often confuse right and left.
“That’s why it’s important education on physical culture since they’re littles, not for holding a weight but for get familiar to moves and spaces,” he comments.
The another aspect to remember is the minimum and maximum ideal age for start up in any sport or discipline.

3. The best sportspersons have a high instruction level
For René Baró, good sportsperson is the opposite to brain weakness. The person must manage all the information related to what practices for the performance to be good and better.
The specialist reminds that in Cuba, the academic instruction levels are high –like studies of international organisms prove- focusing not only on Maths and Language but all sciences and arts, so the person has a wide culture and a pretty accurate criteria. If that one practices sports, that reflects inmediatly as excellent results – high competitivity.

“The two basic elements of every sportsperson are instruction and communication – knows how to act, knows how to express,” he underlines.
Inclusive, Baró suggests the public TV turns into  a tele-school combining in-room and out-room criteria allowing to every person to obtain better scores when upgrading.

Thus, if violence continues to be exploited, we’ll still have a violent country.
He also recommends to prefer Internet as source of investigation before amusement. If not, we’ll still have a society only consuming but not evolving.

4. No negative attitude
The fable tells that Peruvian crabs were put inside a cube and Japanese crabs in another one. They were requested to look for a leader. Peruvian crabs fought to lead the rest while the others pull them down, so all the crowd finished moving in circles inside the cube. In Japanese case, one led and the rest began to follow it in line.
The lack of discipline, courage and self-steeme are, from Baro’s perspective, the factors those unallow the Peruvian sport to be a world potence despite having much talent.

“The Peruvians see a stronger challenger and they inmediatly have a negative vision of them-selves, when a sportsperson must go out to fight,” Baro criticizes.
When negative vision is not self-suggested, there will be ever another compatriot who reminds it. From discouragement to another discouragement, it’s not able to reach anywhere, like the crabs inside the cube.
