Importance of mentorship and legacy in bodybuilding

Bodybuilding has held on alive such itself since it began to spread and promote in Europe in the second half of 19th century, and in the U.S. in the beginning of 20th century, and from both social and cultural spots toward the entire world. Today, it’s very rare the corner of the planet where it doesn’t do, especially if we talk about nations with a high sports vocation as Brazil, here in Latin America.

It wasn’t only about opening more gyms – rather, the gym is the ideal space for what the tradition keeps ever alive, but the history tells us since Lacedemone, Ancient Greece, 18th century B.C., until Esse, actual Germany, 1852 A.D., and then up to date, the importance of this institution ffor learning and developing the physical culture has not fallen down – quite the opposite.

Let’s consider this first idea: it’s not the physical facility what makes the bodybuilding to everlast. The first gyms were big open-air lots delimited with walls where the athletes trained fully naked. Today, although the idea could sound very exotic to rescue, what we have are buildings that keep the same concept of these big lots but under a roof (the most) and with the comfort of modern architecture.

Obviously, most of us already don’t train naked but even at the time of our routine, we unavoidabily end giving up to the marketing of big sports brands. Let’s remember we also can train in the open and we could get the same effect if we do it correctly.

Then, a second idea we should consider is the gym, before the physical space, it’s about a 38-century-old institution, and as a human creation, it’s the presence of persons training and inspiring others to continue training and getting new goals, no doubt.

How does our example influence in the motivation that many bodybuilders and athletes have to start their own sport careers, or a healthy lifestyle at least? The truth is it influences much, if not, think of who inspired you to attend that very first day and to continue persisting until getting your first results, your actual achievement later.

These models inspiring us, whether we meet them in person or not, are called mentors in pedagogy – the persons who form in our heads that we wish or want to be. We have mentors for everything: our profession, our fashion style, our criteria for choosing mates and friends… anyway. Think of your actual life and you’ll understand that somebody inspired you to be who you are, and there’s somebody who is inspiring you to be someone else.

It’s probable we don’t propose to be mentor of anybody and we are in our right, but we are an example the same, and somebody is going to see in us for continuing to train, or leaving to do it. And as the years go by, that one we have inspired to, it’s going to inspire another new generation, and so and so.

But if you are aware of how much your example can influence in the life of other person or other people and you want to take control of the situation, it would be actually good you have a plan or a methodology in mind that allows who you inspire to learn the bodybuilding in a progressive and sequential way, that they appreciate it in a positive way, and that they value their first achievements as an won creation they can go improving.

So, you go building a legacy or heritage of knowledge and attitude around the bodybuilding, which purpose must be the improvement of the training ways, the increasing of life quality, the affirmative and positive self-validation, and the long of who come behind evolve the physical culture for their benefit and the one of who will come behind them. In this sense, the mentorship and the legacy will do the bodybuilding as a sustainable activity in time and space.

You’re not a substitute

This implies you to educate, to get ready for when that new bodybuilder or athlete gets close to you, you have true, precise, and inspiring answers. It’s not about you are going to turn in his physical trainer, but you could complement favorably the work of those professionals so that person gets motivated to ccome back working out the next day, and the next week, and the next month, and the next year.

It would be interesting if these mentorship and legacy strategies are precisely coordinated with the physical trainer for having unity in the messages and the quality of examples. Also, beyond how much weight you lift, it can turn in a natural opportunity to forge constructive social relationships that form a community which you ever could count.

The Road To The Stage

Five lessons you must not forget  when deciding to contest.

By ChulucanasGym

The look of wrestling celebrities inspired Henry hernandez to sign up a gym. "If they can, maybe I  can". He was 18 years  old then. Today he's 29.

The first time he contested was in 2013, in Chulucanas, Peru, the city he born and where he lives currently, after checking  out many magazines and movies about Arnold Schwarzenegger. "I was wondered of the body's aesthetics,"  and in Arnold's  case, he thinks his best body part is his chest, no question about it.

Lesson 1: Give Up On Your Shame and Fear
One of the thinhgs he had to bear was the people bringing him down, but he learned soon to take that easy. "Everything I heard, it went in an ear then went out the other one. I just listened to my body, moving me forward."

Another thing he had to bear was standing up semi-naked on the stage before the public, but when he watched the other  contestants did it untroubled, he felt some relief. "I'm very nervous, so I watched the other contestants performing  without much complication,  and I tried to control that  fear for following the protocols ," he confesses.

[READ also: Our 11 tips when you're looking for a sponsorship.]

Something worst than that? Yes! That you forget about your choreography  and the poses you had planned to do. "I just had  to concentrate myself by looking at the judges, or I closed my eyes avoiding to see the audience, I got focused on my  technique to be well performed."

Henry says as the time passed by, he has come to work  about that topic, so he hopes the next times  he have to contest, he  will superate the fear, that is natural in the other side.  Even, experienced artists say to feel it every time they have  to stand up on the stage. Inclusive, it's a signal they are doing the things right.

The mental work of a contestant is so hard, as the physical one, because has to bear these situations, too many usual among  who contest. They also have to work much their attitude, that reflexes into  their moves fluency on the stage, and ever  keeping in mind to enjoy the time a lot, even when it's about a competition. Staying up there is already a high task.

Lesson 2: Internet is almost never right
The first time he decided to contest at Mister Piura, a state-wide contest, was in 2014, and he started to look for   information on Google to design his training strategy, but he didn't get the results he expected.

Then he understood something: what the search engines highlight is not ever true. For example, that the last days he had  to elliminate the sodium, and he ended holding liquids back. "Ones said one thing, others said another thing," Henry remembers. "The truth is I cannot put my health in risk."

Actually, the Internet doesn't lie although it might say the truth first.  What you have to do is gathering all relevant  information you can, to compare it, and to verify it with recognized and certified sources. Sometimes it's better to delay  many days  until having the full information than getting excited about what appears the first 10 seconds of research.

"Now I follow the people  who had contested and the appropriate sources," Henry affirms.

In ChulucanasGym's case, we have a protocol  useful for you: once we gather all our data,  we consult them with scientific  sources to determine what are true, what are myths, what must be handled carefully; we discard the two last ones, and we only stand up and publish what is a scientific truth and preferently independent because many comes commercially polluted.

Lesson 3: The Body Doesn't Only Live From Weights
In the physical level, the training and the feeding are two key aspects to care.

"I have to manage a diet that fits me because not all the bodies are equal," Henry tells. The common to all the bodies   is indeed all the diets have to balance proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins in right ratios.

If you have access to a nutritionist, you'll can get help to create  a regime made according to your needs.

Henry also eats 5-6 times per day "for the body to be metabolically active, [plus¡ much fruit, much water."

The last week before a competition, reduce the ingestion of carbohydrates although increase the frequency of consumption.  Every two hours in Henry's case. Likewise reduce the consumption of potasium and water at the point that the last day  almost don't drink liquid.

"Gotta see yourself rocky," Henry points out.

[READ ALSO: The importance of a healthy feeding.]

The another aspect is compplying rigorously your training routine. The idea  during the first weeks is building muscle and stabilizing its volume as it grows up. Usually, it's about exercises with  much weight and short repetitions.

The previous weeks to a competition, the scheme changes. "I do hypertrophy exercises with low weight and many repetitions, or pumping-up  exercises to keep, for it to see more  ripped," Henry explains.

In the last weeks, much-weight exercises are not done longer, because you won't gain muscular mass yet.

Remember that two tools you ever got to have ready are the measuring tape for controlling progress in an objective way,   over body measures, and a weighing machine that doesn't lie, for controlling your weitht and being sure you belong  to the  cathegory in what you plan to contest.

[READ ALSO: Do you know what your genetics is?]

Lesson 4: Get everything Ready
The competition day usually divides in two parts: weight control and the performance itself. be aware you have in your  hands everything you need for each one of those phases.

If somebody can helps you for not carrying on everything everywhere, and relief you to take off a reason to concern by the way, will be the best.

If you are one of those who uses to forget the things in the last minute, make a written list on a copybook or your  cellphone, then write down everything you need, so when you have to carry it on, you check it out.  Of course, don't forget  the copybook or the cellphone.

If you learn to organize, everything will be easier.

Lesson 5: Don't Give Up
Despite all this preparation, Henry didn't get  any price in the last contest he entered. What went wrong? According to  him, his preparation was right but he wasn't clear about which one the judges criteria were at the qualification time.

Many contestants use to react angry when the results are not favorable to them. It's natural. But also remember there can  be many personal, external factors those don't generate a victory.

Superate the angryness, pass over the time, continue training consciously. The worst that a sportsman can do is giving up.  He is not done for that. It is not into his DNA. Then, continue superating, set up new goals, contest again.

Remember almost never the triumph comes in the first time you try, but neither expect to get something if you never try it. They can defeat on the stage, but they never won't defeat on your attitude.

“I feel uncomfortable when they look straight at it”

What you can do  when these better-developed body parts of yours seem to catch everybody’s attention.

Percy, 41, Works by turns at the reception of a public building. The suit fits him OK, as much as a guy asked him if he works out – Percy answers “yes, I do,” but, as he judges, he also have noticed many people, no matter the sex, look straight at his ass.

“The suit is made of a thin cloth,” he tells, “then, when I stand up, I feel the people look straight at my buttocks.” It’s when a confusing sensation fills him up: In one hand, it feels good when the people look straight at you, but sometimes you feel the looks want to get you naked.”

Among his chances, Percy has considered to diminish his muscle mass by doing exercise.  That means doing more cardio than power, or more aerobic than anaerobic if we say it otherwise. That could be an option, but is it the right one?

If having much muscle mass is a risk for your physical health, you should consider it, indeed. But if the reason is not at the physical frame, what can you do? Here some practical tips:

  1. Don’t forget what motivated you – The first one you must remember is the reason why you entered training. Do you feel the same conviction than the first day?  Has it increased or decreased? If that excitement keeps strong, or if it has raised, it would be worthy you remind that to yourself everyday you wake up. But, if it had diminished, talk with your trainer alone for reviewing wwwhat is happening, defining what to do up forward.
  2. Use your body language smart – Assume the people is going to see as they have eyes and you can’t do anything to stop them. Even, they can opine about, you can’t do anything to forbid it to them unless it turns stalking. However, if you detect somebody looks straight at that better-developed body part of yours, don’t act aggressively. Look at the eye, address a friendly smile like if were a greeting. The folk will realize you realized, so he or she will prefer to see aside.
  3. Feel proud of all what you worked out – For what nobody ashame you with your body, begin not to feel ashamed of your body by yourself. Take atime alone for watching it, thinking these shapes catching the attention are the result of your own effort (and your genetics, maybe), so assume them like achievements or competitive assets. When you appreciate your body in a positive way, you can go much confident, much attitude, and the people will notice that immediately. They Will continue looking at you but you won’t feel overwhelmed about the way they look at you, actually.
  4. Don’t do it if it’s by shame – Buying baggy clothes is an option only if it gives comfort to your body. But if you do it for eluding the problem, it’s going to increase the regret because, although you cover that highlighting part well, you’ll ever have the idea they follow seeing it anyway.
  5. Switch your posse – Start to make friends who appreciate by your talent beyond your body shape, or that highlighting, umcomfortable body part, or who appreciate you like a full set, who help you to turn the uncomfortable into something natural. Of course, that will demand these friends have a wide-open mind, not telling about the psychological maturity. But consider if you relate with people who is ever repeating you the same, and  in the same tune, you’ll believe in the short-term or the long-term it’s the only way to see the world – your body too. A winner is characterized by keeping the comfort zones off.

Outdoor Training

Much more before  there were the classic gymnasiums, the Hellenic predecessors of the actual facilities, the way how the people kept fit was outdoor. If it’s true the Greek Classic Culture was the one that printed a lot  those activities through its art, there is evidence that every ancient world’s culture had training sessions mainly addressed to war exercises, all them made in the open.

As the time has been going on, the conception of the physical training has been getting close into the gymnasiums as we know them more than 3000 years ago, and only some specific activities have been left to work out outdoor, especially the ones referred to adapt to the natural landscape, as adventure sports. However, the effort to look for a major contact with Nature is motivating the people to depend less on indoor and to rediscover  the advantages of doing it not depending on the limitations of four walls and a roof.

As the environmental quality is guaranteed, one of these main benefits is to oxygenate with pure or mostly pure air. Another of those advantages is improving the mood much more evident compared to indoor only provided the landscape is cared or if it still conserves itsinitial natural setup. That’s why many outdoor training activists, our partner Ronald Benites among them, have demanded the authorities to have more green spaces inside the cities and to conserve the areas as the forests, beaches, wetlands, or any space where the human action has created few or none impact.

Over this basis, the outdoor training activity chances are wide, from calisthenics  to  major physical exigency sports. You choose the one you like a lot because whatever will come OK, the issue is you put in activity, so we have you some very useful tips for it.

1. Check Out The Weather Conditions
There’s no more disappointment than to schedule a day for beginning your training sessions and a heavy rain just starts to fall. It’s not about the heaven sending you any kind of message, it’s about you forgot to check out the weather conditions for the zone where you’re going to work out. Then, the solution is such simple as paying attention to the forecast on your favorite TV or radio station, or newspaper. Also remember today there are services offering you a high level of accuracy those allow to know the weather forecast and check it out real-time, that you can have it as an app on your smartphone, even.

2. Protect From Solar Radiation
Even in cloudy days, remember that having long time outdoor means to be exposed to B-type ultraviolet rays (UVB), unlike their A-type brothers (UVA), those can cause skin burning or cancer, or cataracts in the eyes (we will see which protection on the next point). Then, use a sunscreen that allow you to isolate them while you are out there. Remember the medical consensus is to use that with a 40-to-up sun protection factor (SPF). However, ask your reliable doctor or dermatologist about  wwhich one is the most adequate for your skin type. Also remember the sweat removes the sunscreen, so it’s necessary you to retouch it as suggested, one to two hours in general.

3. Choose The Right Outfit
One thing is working out indoor, where you can work out even naked, but another very different is doing it outdoor where you have to face different elements as solar rays, the wind, the temperature, the humidity, and inclusive the insects. Lookfor  and wear the clothes that guarantee you two things at the same time: protection before those elements, and flexibility for doing your movement in a free and natural way. Also choose the sportshoes those allow you to anchor very well  to the soil (or whatever you have to get your feet on), and that results easy to handle. If you work out during the daylight, wear a hat or a cap according to the circumstance and protect your eyes  with special sunglasses those filter UVB rays, those don’t go flying at the first abrupt movement. Get advice  with your trainer, in a serious sport store, and with other people those also work out outdoor.

4. Never Forget The Medical Kit
If we didn’t advice it before is because we suppose your gym has an accessible one, but when you’re not in a facility of that type, or you’re totally alone at worst, and you have an eventuality as a contusion or any kind of accident, who and how helps you? That’s why it’s worthy to invest in a kit containing band aids, alcohol in gel, iodium, cotton, gauze, sticking plaster, some cream against bites, and even your sunscreen. It’s a good idea your kit box to have a card  wit your name and your phone numbers in emergency case - nobody never knows. Oh, and never it’s useless to know about first aid.

5. Have A Specialized Monitor
As much as the difficulty and the risk of the physical activity you do is major, the ideal would be it has the supervision and the guidance of a person who is paying you attention constantly, who knows how to act if any type of eventuality happens. If you work out in group, it would be fine that one of you to be someone having most experience for becoming that monitor. Remember that one thing is the gym, where you are just a couple of feet away, but another very different is out there where you could be inclusive a couple of hours away.  So listen carefully to your monitor, follow up the recommendations literally. The idea is you to come back to work out, not you to go just once and being forced not to come back for a long time or not coming back never again.

6. Hydrate
Yes, it’s obvious, but it’s necessary to remind it for the same reason than the previous tips. If you are at the gym, you only got to go to the water dispenser or buy a bottle with water, but out there, especially if you are far from the city, the better is you go well-supplied with enough water for hydrating before, during, and especially after  your training session. The same thing if you are accostumed to drink re-hydratant beverages, those only you have to consume after your training session for replacing salt and carbohydrates, not before. Find out more related information here.

7. Leave Clean The Space
It doesn’t matter  if you’re the only person who works out there, and much more reason if it’s about a collective space, avoid to leave trash although that’s not yours, especially if that could harm someone else. Working out outdoor implies a big commitment with the environment, so the hygiene would be a logical and consistent attitude. In consequence, not polluting (anyway) and educating the others through your example not for doing it  will be another of your responsibilities.

8. Create A Community
Although someone will prefer to isolate physically from the rest for a better training, our suggestion is you to try connecting other people like you doing certain outdoor sport or discipline around your region, your country or the world for interchanging experiences, warning for any cause, or even seeing the chance to visit each other for sharing the experience by promoting a kind of sport tourism. The social media are currently the means for commiting that task effectively and efficiently. Use them responsibly.

9. Share Your Experience
If you are who think your relatives, friends or contacts deserve to share the same satisfaction you get when you work out outdoor, try to write something and post it on your social media where you tell how you had, describe the place, and motivate the people to go with you or by themselves. If you want, share your experience with our crew on our Twitter account, by writing us at chulucanasgym@gmail.com, or leaving some message right below. We’ll enjoy to read you!

A bodybuilding-based cult?

VISITOR’S DISCRETION ADVISED

The story is not probably new., but who tell it did look for  picturing it as featured on this post. It’s about the young farmer male, who doesn’t find opportunities to develop in his environment and decides to migrate to the big city. But instead finding progress, he finds much obstacles and multiple temptations  those put him in the edge of social risk, mainly crime and drug addiction.

Then, a solidarian hand ddiscovers him at an eventual job that only provides him the necessary to survive, and realizes he has a potential to launch a career in bodybuilding. It opens him the doors of a gymnasium, the Young male wonders about the new world revealed to him and takes the opportunity. He begins to work out, grows up physically, changes his mind from conformism to competitiveness, feels motivated to contest, and eventually gets little-but-significant triumphs.

Itt’s evident the contrast between a life without goals and what seems to be the beginning of a career that promises achievements, and it could be the story of your own life. But the element that nobody would think is that the story were pitched to some magazines or websites specialized in bodybuilding, instead, it could have a religious use, rather. Yes, themuscular development of a bodybuilder becomes to use for enhancing a very little cult considering its followers, but what uses an ancestral symbology.

It happens in Jamaica, where the Church of Kyrios Christ, that proposes a big influence of the African culture in the three big religions of humankind, but what became invisible because of apparent race factors, has used the power of bodybuilding to make popular the cult for one of its orishas, a kind of demigods, named Olorun. The Church, which theology is based upon youruba  cults, also proposes the reinvindication of the African-descendant people into the world’s history, and it performs a ceremony every year when it renacts that orisha’s myth.

According to its parishioners, Olorun was made a slave during the colonial trafficking started in 16th century (beautiful literary works have born from that time in the Americas). Once he lived at the barracks  of an estate located in the actual Chalacalá Town, near Sullana City, Peru, the orisha was a rebel mood, so the estate-owner used to punish by leaving naked and wearing a fetter with chains to humiliate to him, but Olorun, calling out divine forces, took the bold piece of metal with his hands and broke up by his own power.

A very ancient tactic
Independently this event was whether historically true or not, it’s enacted during this ceremony in Jamaica with the evident purpose that the parishioners not to forget about it, so reaffirming the cult values. And according to the Church, it looks for a model, usually Colombian or Jamaican, every year to perform the Olorun role, something that, as the organization’s leaders say, is accepted as a high honor by the chosen actor.

The idea of taking a real human being to remember or invoke an abstract reference or a belief is an oldest resource as  the art and culture of humankind. In Classic Greece, the Olympics’ winners used to be featured as the models for the statues of gods (and goddesses, because there were also  contests for women), and one of the philosophic principles at the ancient gymnasiums stated that the perfection of human shape was the closest way to look like a god or a goddess.

And that health-art-religion relationship has kept along the time, maybe hidden until the Renaissance (15th century), but present up to today. Iff not, look around slowly when you go to the gym and have your own conclusions.

Good or bad?
So, only if the bodybuilder is aware he is actually training. It could be an interesting strategy  to reach constance, one of the values muchly hardworking to grow. But if the bodybuilder cannot take off the character of god or demigod, or celebrity, or famous person, or popular referent, it will be necessary professionalassistance with pairs advisory.

In this sense, the work of the trainer is crucial. It must not be reduced to care the athlete for doing the movement correctly, or complete the required reps or sets. He also has to take time to explore the psychology  of his pupil so giving him  the right support, and knowing to motivate him for continuing to overcome. Maybe, it’s not necessary to say him that he has to look like a god, but it’s important to feedback the goals  both proposed since the training began, and maybe this is one of the keywords – goals.

About the rest, the use of the religion to advocate a healthy lifestyle, only done with awareness and not falling into the fanatism, could result very positive. Many ancestral religions have very specific habits about feeding, for example, those have been incorporated as diet schemes accepted by international organisms, but stressing the basis of the variety and the balance.

And about the art-bodybuilding relationship, we think it’s an excellent combination only provided the bodybuilder assumes his artist stage as a dimension to set free in the whole sense of the expression, not like an obsession many times badly directed by some producers or career managers, who could be thinking the things more of audience or incomes matters. Like the food, everything in the right balance will be ever positive.

Why should I take a sauna?

When a simple shower and soap is not enough, this procedure allows you to purify inside out.

The sauna, also known as sauna bath, is submitting the body to high temperature for the skin pores to open up, sweat much more, eliminate impurity and toxins in a complementary way to the daily bath with water and soap.

It’s not recent fashion. Archaeological surveys have found it was already doing in Scandinavia 7000 years ago, much before the classic gymnasiums. Don’t miss the empire Romans whom the therma was not only a physical health place but social meeting.

If you’re a bodybuilder or an athlete, taking a sauna should be part of your weekly routine because you need to purify your skin deeply, you need a space of personal relaxation, because it stimulates the good blood stream. Remember that, even when you do anaerobic training, a good blood irrigation eases the development and keeping of muscles.

How should I take a sauna?

It’s recommendable to make an appointment to the sauna once or twice a week. The technique is based on submitting the body to controlled changes of body temperature for stimulating the sweating.

  1. You should take a cold shower, rubbing your skin with soap, starting in the feet, then going up to your head.
  2. Go into the sauna, stand there for lapses of 15 to 20 minutes if you’re a beginner, 30 to 45 minutes if you already have experience.
  3. Take a 5-minute cold shower starting in the feet then going up to the head, again (you can also  immerse into a cold water pool or tub).
  4. Repeat all the procedure once or twice more.
  5. Rest layed about 15 minutes in a quiet, low-light room.

If you’re a beginner, you’re perfect doing one cooling-warming-cooling cycle until you temper for repeating it but the next session.

Steam or dry? The important is you sweat. However, you could begin the first cycle with a steam bath, then going into the dry sauna, or doing the dry in one session then the steam in the next one. Every sauna service should hire a specialist who assign where you must stand to enjoy better the benefits, even.

Oh, take the sauna bath totally naked (if the place rules allow it). If you cover up, your body won’t sweat straight, and the idea is releasing pretty easily  all the bad stuff your pores keep in,. It’s true you may feel ashamed, but think about you do this for health, not necessarily for vanity. Well, it’s valid too.

Which cases mustn’t I take a sauna?

  • Never take a sauna bath just finishing to work out. Give you a break, at least 15 minutes, then start the cooling cycle. If you obviate this step, it’s possible you decompensate because your body has been submitted to exhaustion so the heat can exhaust you more.
  • Neither take a sauna bath just after eating. Wait about 4 hours. Don’t enter the sauna with the glocose-free body – eat something that increases slightly your sugar to avoid the decompensation due to the sweat.
  • If you suffer from the heart or the kidneys, it’s better first to ask a medical doctor. The same if your skin suffer from irritation or if it suffers from infections by bacteria or virus, it’s preferrable that a medical doctor advise you if the sauna makes good or bad.
  • When the sauna session ends, rehydrate with water or fruit juices. Never drink alcoholic beverages because if you already go out dehydrated, the alcohol will dehydrate you more.

In the end, temazcal, hammam, onsen. Which one is better? Actually, all work under the same principle, but the operation ways and the places where they are much spread are very different. But, in essence, all they get the same exact benefit.
